“Well, holding the map upside down would do it,” River said, laughing at how much the Doctor was overreacting. Taking the map from his hands, she soon found where they were, and where they wanted to go. ”We want to go that way for a few blocks, but we’re close to the museum,” she said as she pointed down the street. Folding the map back up, she took the Doctor’s hand and dragged him off down the street.
The Doctor tried to peek over her shoulder at the map, but all he saw was squiggles and a mess of shapes and words. Right before he was about to give up, River told him the directions of the map. Before the Doctor could respond, he found himself being dragged by River to the museum.
“River,” he said. ”I don’t even know what museum we’re going to!” He watched as her blonde curls bounced and shone in the sunlight. He began to say something, but they were already at the museum. ”Oh, look at that!” the Doctor said in amazement. ”That was surprisingly quick!” Looking at River skeptically, he said,”Did you use your old vortex manipulator to get us here quicker? I thought I took care of that..”
“…We’re not going to do that tonight, are we?” River asked with a chuckle. As odd as it was, she just wanted a relaxing night with the Doctor tonight. “But that does sound interesting.” she said with a smile.
“Let’s go to the art museum, save the best for last,” River said, taking his hand. She was quite excited about the Eiffel Tower. ”Where’d you put the map, so I can get us somewhere? Wouldn’t want you confusing your up from your down again.”
Reluctantly, the Doctor dug out the map from his pockets. ”Oh, shut up. That was one time! And it wasn’t my fault we were on an anti-gravity planet. The tiniest mistake like-” He paused and mumbled,”Like holding the map upside down…” The Doctor glanced at River before continuing in a normal tone. ”…It completely messed everything up!” he finished in an outburst.
Amy listened to everything he had to say and nodding. She understood it all a bit better. But she didn’t understand how this would help anything. There was no point in stating that though. “Alright. I understand. I think. I’ll keep the watch safe. No one will ever see it or get to it. I promise. And you…I have to keep an eye on you too don’t I?” Amy said. There was an almost amused sort of smile creeping on her lips at the last bit. She wondered what he’d be like, being human. How different would he be? “Well, get on with it then. I’ll watch that tape like you said if I have any other questions,” she told him. They were still in danger there and she knew that the sooner they got out of here the better. The TARDIS couldn’t keep them safe forever, at least she didn’t think so.
The Doctor grinned. ”Yes, because I am bound to get into trouble.” Hopping up, he exclaimed,”Alright! First things first.” He bounded to the console and dragged the monitor over to his standing spot. ”I need to double check the stats, make sure I won’t come out acting like a monkey instead of a human.” Then the Doctor made his way to the Chameleon Ark. Stopping, he thought for a second and turned back to Amy.
“One more thing,” he said cautiously. ”Taking out a consciousness and putting it somewhere else isn’t an easy job. I need you to stand back, and whatever you do, Amy, don’t interfere with the process. Because it does hurt. A lot.”
“Just because you can’t hold your alcohol doesn’t mean I can’t hold mine,” River murmured, seeing the Doctor’s eyes watching her wine glass. She smiled at him, tryin g to reassure him that she would be fine. ”And that sounds fantastic. Could we possibly go to an art museum? They have the greatest museums here,” she said, happy at the prospecy of exploring Paris.
The Doctor smiled at the thought of an art museum. “That sounds fantastic! The last time I visited an art museum, I ended up meeting Vincent Van Gogh and fought off an invisible monster that only Vincent’s brilliant mind could see.”
After finishing their meal, he waved a waiter over for the check. He payed and led River out of the restaurant. ”Would you rather go to the museum or the Eiffel Tower first?” he asked.
Laughing, River shook her head. “You’re a mess, sweetie,” she said. “Amy told me about how much of a problem you were when you two first met. You could be a little nicer about it, couldn’t you?” She took a bite of the food set before her, and it was delicious. She had always heard about the delicious food in France, and now she got to try some for herself.
“So, you’re the tour guide for the evening, where are we headed after this?” River asked, pouring herself another glass of wine. If the Doctor wasn’t going to have any, she didn’t want the whole bottle to go to waste. Another glass wouldn’t hurt.
“I just state the truth! I’m not going to force myself to eat bad food. And I was in the middle of my regeneration! I had to figure out my tastes. You know how that can be.” The Doctor began to eat his food, and he found he enjoyed it much more than apples and beans.
Eyeing River with another glass of wine, he replied,”I was thinking going up to the Eiffel Tower, and something of your choice. Unless you have any objections…”
Amy stared at him, eyes searching his for something, what was he telling her? What was he going to do? “What are you talking about? Something you’ve had to do before?” She questioned. But no answer was given. That didn’t surprise her very much. She saw him get a watch and pass it over to her. She looked it over, strange marking were on it and she couldn’t read them, whatever they were.
“I don’t understand. What do you mean this is my life for the next four months? You’re making no sense. What are you going to do? Answer me,” Amy said, her Scottish tone thick with annoyance. Why could he never explain himself. She watched as a helmet lower from the ceiling and she suddenly felt worried. “What is that? What are you going to do?” She questioned in a murmur. She felt like a child, asking all of these questions. But she wanted answers and she was a bit frightened, not that she’d ever tell him that.
After adding some instructions by the push of a few buttons, the Doctor grabbed the watch from Amy’s hands and places it on the console near the helmet. Sighing, he walked over to Amy. ”I know you have a lot of questions,” he said, taking her hand. ”I’m sorry that I don’t have time to answer them all. There’s a videotape that could answer a few of them, but that will be saved for later.”
The Doctor looked into her eyes. ”I have to turn human, Amelia. This helmet is called a Chameleon Ark, and the watch is called a fob watch. The Chameleon Ark extracts my Time Lord consciousness and stores it into this watch. As soon as I open the watch again, the consciousness will rush back into me and will become a Time Lord again. When I’m human, I won’t acknowledge the watch. I’ll just think its some worthless piece of machinery. But you must make sure it doesn’t get into their hands.”
Well, why don’t you tell me and I can pass it along?
*smiles slightly* If you ever really are able to pass anything along, just…tell him..I didn’t go back to what I was made for. I really have been trying to live up to what he wants me to be…I just want him to know that, just so he knows that, when I die trying to do something ridiculous and impossible, I was trying to save someone else. *laughs shortly* I seem to be pretty good at that, dying for someone else!
I’ll tell him. I promise.
*almost shocked in a way* You’d honestly do that? *breaks into a wide grin* Wow..thank you! Really, I mean it, you have no idea how amazing you are for doing this!
Yeah, no problem..
